Abstract

Wheat bran is the layer where most of the dietary fiber and minerals in the grain are found. However, it is discarded in the milling process to obtain wheat flour. Despite the richness of polysaccharides in bran, extraction is often uninteresting and costly for the food industry. Colon Cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide and both diet and lifestyle have been shown to play a key role in the development of the disease. Several studies have shown that soluble polysaccharides have beneficial effects in mitigating Colon Cancer emergence and growth. The aim of this work is to extract soluble polysaccharides from discarded wheat bran in an inexpensive way, analyze their physic-chemical structure and evaluate their anticancer effects against Colon Cancer cell lines in 2D and 3D cultures.
