Abstract

This project is an extension of the undergraduate research Rewriting the author: A translation proposal of George Orwell's Political Diary of 1941, funded by FAPESP (Process No. 2021/13811-3), and it aims at an overseas research internship scholarship (Bolsa Estágio de Pesquisa no Exterior - BEPE/FAPESP), to fund an on-site investigation at The George Orwell Archive (University College London) and the British Newspaper Archive (British Library). The host supervisor of the project is Prof. Dr. Ana Cláudia Suriani da Silva, founder and coordinator of the SELCS Brazilian Translation Club (UCL) and a specialist in Genetic Criticism from ITEM (Institut des Textes et Manuscrits Modernes, one of the pioneer centres in genetic studies), among other numerous qualifications. The BEPE/FAPESP objective is to find tools from genetic criticism that could help and inform the translation process, as well as answers to contextual questions that have arisen during the rewriting of George Orwell's first political diary into Brazilian Portuguese. The theoretical framework that supports this study is the notion of zones of proximity, by Gilles Deleuze (1998), and the translation experience through genetic studies of Marie-Hélène Paret Passos (2011). The methodology is based on the Brazilian approach to genetic criticism by Cláudia Amigo Pino and Roberto Zular (2007). The expected outcome is to obtain enough information and knowledge to develop a critical introduction and notes to the Brazilian Portuguese translation of Orwell's first political diary, providing contextualized material to those Brazilian scholars who might be interested in either George Orwell, translation through genetic criticism, or the Second World War.
