Abstract

This project aims to analyze the role of American cooperation in the development of projects in the agricultural sector in Brazil made by the Technical Office of Agriculture (ETA) between 1953-1961. ETA was created under the Point IV - a U.S technical cooperation program launched by the Harry Truman government in the so-called "underdeveloped" countries in the 1950s - and was operated, on the American side, by the Agriculture and Natural Resources Division (ANR), which carried out cooperation activities in areas related to the production and development of agriculture, mainly through technical assistance work, resulting, above all, in personnel for the partner projects. The main objective of the project is to intersect the interests of Brazilian agricultural elites with the US action via ANR-ETA. Thus, we will explore the extent to which ETA's actions sought to order and develop practices for the Brazilian domestic market, favoring certain sectors and interests of specific agricultural elites, within employer associations such as the National Society of Agriculture (SNA) and the Brazilian Rural Confederation (CRB). The analysis is based on the ANR reports. between 1954 and 1958, Diplomatic documents between Brazil and USA on agricultural programs between 1953 and 1961, and reports from institutions established by ETA such as the Brazilian Association of Credit and Rural Extension during 1956 and 1961.
