Abstract The two main objectives of neuroscience are to understand the correct working of the brain and propose treatments for brain diseases. In healthy activities, short-term plasticity (STP) is associated with an important role in motor processing, attention functions, and working memory. On the other hand, abnormal synaptic dynamics can be related to neurological diseases like Alzheimer and Parkinson. Synchronized activities are also involved in both healthy and neurological disorders like epilepsy, Alzheimer and Parkinson. Thus, the proposed work has the general goal to study the influence of STP on the dynamics of the neuronal networks. Dynamics is measured in terms of spiking rate, firing pattern (spike, burst or silence), coefficient of variation, and the synaptic currents. The STP model describe the synaptic dynamics of recovered, active, and inactive neurotransmitters, from the presynaptic neurons. STP can exhibit different synaptic regimes like facilitation, depression, pseudo-linear, and biphasic. These regimes can affect neuronal activities including the capacity to synchronize. Thereby, one objective of this project is to understand how these different STP regimes are related to normal and abnormal synchronization of the neuronal network. Another objective is to analyse how external signal inputs can affect neuronal dynamics, aiming at a better understanding of the influence of STP on the capacity of neuronal networks to detect, process and encode stimuli.
