Abstract

Introduction Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a progressive disease with high mortality and morbidity, and constitutes a public health problem. Annually, the disease affects 5% of the world's population and the data shows a tendency for this rate to increase in the coming years, ranking the third leading cause of death from non-communicable diseases. Well-established indices such as age, forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), body mass index and smoking can function as predictors for negative outcomes- death, risk of acute COPD exacerbation and risk of readmission. Knowledge of these predictors helps in the method of patient assessment, in determining their management and in the decision to be admitted in the hospital or in the intensive care unit. Studies have identified pro-adenomedullin, body mass index and the 6-minute walk test, as the three independent variables for predicting 2-year mortality in COPD patients, with Pro ADM being the most significant. Other studies have demonstrated the importance of biomarkers - D-dimer, troponin, BNP, interleukin 6 and interleukin 8, CRP - as important predictors of negative outcome for patients with COPD Objective: To know the clinical, epidemiological and laboratory profile of patients with COPD and to correlate with unfavorable outcome markers such as death and hospitalization for exacerbation Methods Prospective longitudinal study. In this project, it is estimated to work with a convenience sample of 50 patients followed up at the pulmonology outpatient clinic of the HU-UFSCar. Patients will not undergo intervention in the therapeutic regimen and will undergo clinical evaluation, transthoracic echocardiography, spirometry, and a blood collection for biomarkers measurement. Quality of life will be evaluated and patients will be monitored for the presence of an unfavorable outcome for 1 year of follow-up. The collection of biomarkers will be carried out on the day of acceptance of participation in the research. Expected Results: We hope to know the clinical, epidemiological and laboratory profile of COPD patients followed up at the outpatient clinic of the mentioned service. In addition, we hope to identify a correlation between biomarkers and unfavorable prognoses in patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
