Abstract

In the second half of the 15th century, the famous jeronymite monk Hernando de Talavera (1428-1507) produced a set of works on the Christian faith to serve as a kind of guide for the spiritual and pastoral guidance of Christians. With the aim of combating the sins of the language, the monk formulated, at the turning point between the medieval context and the modern world, the booklet "Muy provechoso tractado contra el murmurar y decir mal de otro en su absencia, que es muy gran pecado e muy usado". In compliance with this document, the present study intends to examine the monk's criticisms directed to the sins of the tongue, especially that of murmuring. So that it achieves the objectives it proposes, the main purpose of this investigation will be to scrutinize both the means of practicing these sins, as well as the paths suggested by the monk as a way to avoid them.
