Abstract

The present study has two objectives: 1. To formulate experimental dentifrices containing different polymers (CHI: chitosan; LPP: sodium linear polyphosphate; MPC: 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine and Carbopol) associated to fluoride (F-, as NaF) and to fluoride plus stannous (Sn2+, as SnCl2), which will be characterized in terms of pH and fluoride release; 2. To test the efficacy of these formulations in the prevention of erosive tooth wear on enamel and dentin. For this, fragments of each substrate will be used (4 mm × 4 mm × 2 mm), and they will be obtained from bovine incisors. The fragments will be ground flat, polished and randomly distributed into the following experimental groups (n = 10 / substrate): 1. Negative control - brushing with artificial saliva; 2. Positive control - conventional fluoride dentifrice (Elmex Erosion, 1400 ppm F-); 3. Experimental placebo dentifrice (without actives); 4. Experimental dentifrice with CHI; 5. Experimental dentifrice with CHI + F; 6. Experimental dentifrice with CHI +F+Sn; 7. Experimental dentifrice with LPP; 8. Experimental dentifrice with LPP + F; 9. Experimental dentifrice with LPP + F + Sn; 10. Experimental dentifrice with MPC; 11. Experimental dentifrice with MPC + F; 12.Experimental dentifrice with MPC + F +Sn; 13. Experimental dentifrice with Carbopol; 14. Experimental dentifrice with Carbopol + F ; 15. Experimental dentifrice with Carbopol + F + Sn. Then, the specimens will be subject to an erosion-abrasion cycle, consisting of 5 min of immersion in 1% citric acid solution, followed by immersion in artificial saliva for 60 min, 4 times a day. Brushing will be performed in a brushing machine, using soft brushes and a slurry of toothpaste and artificial saliva, at a ratio of 1: 3, twice a day. This procedure will be repeated for 5 days. After cycling, specimens will be evaluated for surface loss (in ¼m) using an optical profilometer. The dentifrices will be characterized in relation to their pH and potentially available fluoride (analyzed in the dentifrice suspensions). Data obtained will be statistically evaluated, considering a significance level of 5%.
