Abstract

Some plant-derived polysaccharides present immunomodulatory potential. A proinflammatory environment can aggravate colorectal cancer pathogenesis and progression. Pectins have been studied in this regard as protector molecules. One of the most promising results in this area is the interaction between different pectic epitopes and varied Toll-like receptors. The capacity of restoring intestinal barrier disruptive scenarios has also been explored with those molecules. The pattern of the methyl-esterification appearance throughout the molecule is one of the hypothesized and explored aspects to those beneficial biological effects observed. Many different pectin sources have been studied, however passion fruit has not gone through this type of analysis before. Therefore, the application of passion fruit pectin, both native and thermally modified, is a major topic of interest. (AU)
