Quality of School Feeding Menus: a comparative study between two Indicators

Abstract

The school meal is offered for Brazilian students of public basic education through the National School Meal Program (PNAE); this policy integrates a set of strategies that aim to contribute to the Human Right to Adequate Food. To contribute to public management regarding the provision of quality meals to schoolchildren, different instruments were developed to evaluate the menus. The aim of this study is to compare the results of the evaluation of school meals produced by IQCAE and IQCOSAN indicators. This is a quantitative and cross-sectional study, which will use secondary data, obtained within the scope of the project "Updating the Quality Indicator for School Meals Menus and study of associated factors". The municipalities will be described according to size and Human Development Index (HDI). The score for each component of both indicators will be described by frequency; mean values and confidence intervals (IC95%) and percentages will be calculated in relation to each maximum score, per component, and for the total score. Currently, the study has evaluated 37 of the 108 menus in the sample by IQCOSAN. Among them, 16 are classified as adequate, 18 as of intermediate quality and 3 as inadequate. The comparison of the results produced by both instruments can contribute to the improvement of the PNAE.
