Abstract

The menstrual cycle is a biological phenomenon that corresponds to the reproductive period of healthy women and has an average duration of 28 days. This period begins at puberty and ends at menopause. Although some studies have evaluated the difference in metabolism during the menstrual cycle, the results are inconsistent in the literature. Therefore, the aim of this work is to evaluate and compare resting metabolic rate (RMR) and carbohydrate and lipid oxidation in healthy young women in the follicular and luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. This is a scientific initiation, cohort study with women of reproductive age (18 to 30 years) and regular menstrual cycles. The sample will be composed of 20 volunteers who will be evaluated regarding anthropometry, body composition and indirect calorimetry for the determination of RMR and oxidation of substrates. Assessments will take place in two moments: 1) Follicular phase: between the 2nd and 4th day after the onset of menstruation; 2) Luteal Phase: between the 16th and 18th day after the start of menstruation. It is important to note that the evaluations will be carried out within the same menstrual cycle. From this study it is expected to collect data on energy expenditure and oxidation of carbohydrates and lipids during the different phases of the menstrual period. It is also considered to be a great learning opportunity for academic Laura Alves, from the Nutrition and Metabolism Course at the University of São Paulo (USP) in Ribeirão Preto.
