Abstract

The research project is dedicated to the doctoral internship to be carried out at the National Museum of Natural History and Science of the University of Lisbon (Museu de História Natural e da Ciência da Universidade de Lisboa, MUHNAC-ULISBOA) under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Marta C. Lourenço, director of the University's museums. University museums are complex, since they integrate the functions of investigation, collection, conservation, interpretation and exhibition of society's tangible and intangible heritage (ICOM, 2022) and the teaching and research activities inherent to the university's mission. The University of Lisbon museums were selected since they are part of the confluence of several international networks: (a) global scale - International Council of Museums Committee for University Museums and Collections (UMAC-ICOM); (b) transcontinental scale: Ibermuseos; (c) continental scale: Universeum - European Academic Heritage Network; and (d) national scale: Portuguese Research Infrastructure of Scientific Collections (PRISC). MUHNAC consists of the former buildings of the ULisboa Polytechnic School, the Botanical Garden and the Ajuda Astronomical Observatory. The collection of operational data (non-confidential) and interviews with professionals responsible for building maintenance and/or conservation will allow the management and evaluation model - proposed in the ongoing thesis - to gain strength by incorporating the best practices evidenced by the four months of search abroad.
