Abstract

Although a high volume of knowledge has been created on how to solve urban mobility problems in big Brazilian cities, little attention has been given to political equilibria which leads to the current lack of innovative public policy propositions. This work seeks to start to fill this gap by analyzing the implementation of bus and cycle lanes in São Paulo, policies that can be considered highly redistributive in terms of the road public space, which is usually destined for car lanes. Thus, this work will analyze, from one side, the political incentives that politicians may have to implement this public good locally and, from the other side, the electoral behavior of voters that were directly impacted by these policies.
