Abstract

With this research project, we seek to understand the roles and functions of medium-sized cities based on the interscale spatial interactions that are established within the scope of a hierarchical network of cities and that generate constant flows of inhabitants from the small cities surrounding these regional centers, making -population arrangements of polarizing nuclei. In this way, the processes resulting from these constant flows, complicate and shape urban networks that are increasingly heterogeneous and centralized in medium-sized cities, making the role and centrality of small cities increasingly articulated with the regional dynamics of medium-sized cities, a relationship in which comes to be understood as an advance towards an urban heterarchy. The medium-sized cities of Maringa, parana and their respective Intermediate Urban Articulation Region (IBGE, 2021) were taken as a study cutout, using data obtained by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, comparing the methodologies applied in each study, performing interviews with well-informed agents, thus seeking to characterize the spatial interactions established through a network of medium and small cities.
