Abstract

Solar radiation is a key factor in exposome, leading to cutaneous photoaging, which harms the skin barrier function, induces hyperpigmentation, and can even lead to burns. Thus, the use of sunscreens is a fundamental way to reduce the skin damage provoked by solar radiation. Sunscreens are effective against the skin damage caused by prolonged sun exposure. In addition to sunscreens, photoprotection can be improved by using natural antioxidants in the formulation. In this context, jabuticaba extract - Plinia cauliflora from Brazilian biodiversity, which presents a rich flavonoid composition, can be applied to develop multifunctional sunscreen formulations. In addition to solar radiation, air pollution is another exposure factor that can cause premature skin aging. In this context, the combination of Tara - Caesalpinia spinosa fruit extract and red algae - Kappaphycus alvarezii, which contain polysaccharides, presents film-forming properties that could be applied to reduce the interaction between the skin and pollutants. In this context, the research and development of cosmetic formulations with film-forming properties can help to obtain more stable and effective multifunctional formulations for skin protection. In addition, the use of antioxidants in sunscreen formulations can protect the skin from oxidative stress caused by pollution and solar radiation.
