Abstract

Cities in tropical climates will be the most affected by the warming caused by climate change and the effects of urban heat island intensification. Nevertheless, the main studies in the field of outdoor thermal comfort have been carried out in countries with temperate climates, there being a gap in research related to heat mitigation strategies in tropical climates. In the context of the tropical belt, studies are focused on Southeast Asian countries, such as Singapore. Due to the significant warming that Singapore has experienced, in the last decades the country has been researching and implementing solutions to combat the urban heat island effect through programs that involve local universities and bring experts from different parts of the world. Through exploratory activities, this research internship abroad aims to identify heat-mitigation strategies that can be incorporated into proposals for knowledge-based urban developments, aligned with the goals of sustainable development. Collaboration with researchers with extensive expertise at the National University of Singapore (NUS) will be essential for developing proposals that encompass the most suitable and current solutions in terms of outdoor thermal comfort.
