Abstract

This study, whose results will be integrated into the thematic project "Assessment of Impacts and vulnerability to climate change in Brazil and Strategies for adaptation option" (Proc. FAPESP 2008/58161-1), aims to identify extreme rainfall events in the 19 municipalities that belong to the Metropolitan Region of Campinas (MRC) recorded between 1970 and 2010, assessing their consequences, frequency and location and pointing out the most susceptible areas and the most affected social grouping. The study foresees the analyses of the towns’ Master Plans, the land use and land cover legislation, as well as the urban evolution and the social characteristics of the municipalities which are most heavily impacted by rainfall. It is also a scope of this research to contribute to a better understanding of the socio-environmental issues within the Metropolitan Region of Campinas
