Abstract

Irreversible pulpitis is described by persistent and intense pain due to inflammation of the pulp. Its diagnosis is made through visual inspection, thermal tests and radiographic examinations. Saliva can be collected in a non-invasive, easily accessible, reproducible manner, which becomes an attractive source of possible biomarkers that may allow an early and accurate diagnosis of irreversible pulpitis. Performing a biochemical analysis and salivary redox status in irreversible pulp will allow the investigation of the chemical changes that occur in this process, contributing to diagnostic and prognostic purposes. The present study aims to evaluate the salivary biochemical composition (pH, organic capacity, total protein, amylase, calcium, phosphate) and redox status markers (total oxidative capacity (TOC), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), uric acid, TBARS and protein carbonyl) in patients with irreversible pulpitis. Samples will be collected from 32 patients who were referred for dental care at the Araçatuba School of Dentistry FOA-UNESP. Patients with indication for orthodontic protection and third molars and patients diagnosed with irreversible pulpitis will be included. A statistical analysis of the results will be performed. The normality and homogeneity of the data will be verified and the most appropriate parametric or nonparametric test will be requested. For all tests, it will be set at 5% (p < 0.05).
