Abstract

Murilo Mendes' travels to Europe have aroused interest both for of the poet's interaction with European artists and writers and for of the work he produced there over the years, reaching new readers and configuring his image as a writer outside Brazil. After his first trips to Europe, from 1952 to 1956, Murilo settled in Rome, where he was appointed by the Itamaraty to the Chair of Brazilian Studies at the University of Rome, La Sapienza, but he frequently visited countries such as Spain, Belgium, Greece, France and Portugal, to walk or to work. Of the countries in which Murilo established dialogues, we are interested in Portugal, whose relationship predates his travels. The writer published in the country, corresponded with the Portuguese and won a posthumous exhibition, the first to make his art collection public. In this sense, this research seeks to investigate the critical reception of Murilo Mendes' work by the Portuguese, through archival research to be carried out in Portugal. It seeks to understand the aesthetic and cultural issues that moved the author's production and to compare them with the readings carried out by Portuguese critics, especially since the 1960s, when was published the book Tempo espanhol, a an anthology of his poems and the posthumous book Janelas verdes, in addition to the author's participation in magazines and collections.
