Abstract

The sea offers unimaginable resources for the development of new technologies, and in line with the UN Decade of the Ocean, these resources need to be explored in the right way to address technological gaps. One potential application that has been attracting attention is the use of marine bioactives for the development of biomaterials applied to cell regeneration. This project aims to extract collagen from marine sponges (Aplysina fulva) and use it as a matrix for the fabrication of composites with functional nanoparticles. The nanoparticles to be used (Ag2WO4, Ag2MoO4, ZnWO4 e ZnMoO4) exhibit interesting biological characteristics, such as high antimicrobial activity, antitumor activity, high biocompatibility, and cellular regeneration capacity. When combined with collagen, these nanoparticles may amplify the biological properties in the field of tissue engineering. The main focus is the production of dressings using 3D printing. The obtained materials will be characterized using various physicochemical techniques to understand how structural, morphological, and electronic modifications affect the mechanical and thermal responses of the composites. The antimicrobial activity of the dressings will be evaluated through time kill and inhibition zone tests using fungal and bacterial models. Proliferation, genotoxicity, and anti-inflammatory activity will be assessed through in vitro studies using murine and human cell lines to enhance cell regeneration in these dressings. An investigative analysis of biological processes will be conducted to correlate the role of functional nanoparticles in the collagen composites obtained through 3D printing.
