Abstract In-network computing is revolutionizing modern networking by executing computational tasks directly within the network infrastructure (e.g., in SmartNICs or programmable switches). However, offloading computational tasks and applications from the server's CPUs and middleboxes to the network infrastructure is not a trivial task, especially due to resource constraints and management challenges of traditional networks. This research proposal addresses several key aspects of offloading network functions and applications to the network. More specifically, this proposal investigates (i) how to optimize current in-network applications, and (ii) which legacy applications can benefit from offloading to the networking realm. Furthermore, this proposal aims to standardize the communication between the CPU applications and the network infrastructure, enabling even more tasks to be offloaded. This proposal outlines the research goals, methodology, and potential research plan for each research question. (AU) | |
