Abstract

HIV infection remains a global health concern due to its high prevalence and chronicity. It is estimated that there are 39 million people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) worldwide, according to the 2022 global report by UNAIDS (Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS). In Brazil, 13 thousand deaths were reported in 2022 due to this disease. In addition to the epidemiological dimension, the disease has significant impacts on the social and economic spheres, affecting families, communities, and healthcare systems, which expend substantial resources on prevention, treatment, and psychological support for individuals affected by the disease. The relevance of this study lies in the scarcity of such information in the Brazilian context in recent times. The results obtained could be useful for early identification and appropriate treatment as strategies to prevent the progression of the disease to advanced stages and death. This approach not only reduces the morbidity associated with the infection but also has the potential to improve the quality of life of patients. Furthermore, understanding the characteristics associated with the death of this population is fundamental for guiding interventions and the development of public health policies. By understanding the specific framework of these cases, such clinical and policy interventions can be more effective, resulting in improvements in care and the reduction of the impact of HIV/AIDS on the population. In this context, this study aims to investigate the mortality rate and factors associated with death in people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) hospitalized between 2020 and 2023 at Hospital São Paulo with advanced disease. The analysis will include the evaluation of epidemiological, clinical, complementary examination, and therapeutic characteristics preceding and during hospitalization.
