Abstract

Introduction: The main metabolic alteration of chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD) is secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT), resulting in bone mass loss. One of the factors characterizing SHPT is the increase in circulating parathyroid hormone (PTH). Elevated total PTH concentration is correlated with left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). However, it is not known which fractions of this hormone are associated with LVH. Objective: To evaluate the different circulating forms of PTH and their relationship with LVH in patients with CKD stages 2-4 and bone mass loss. Methodology: Patients with CKD stages 2-4, of both sexes, clinically stable, and aged between 18 and 75 years will be studied. Clinical, demographic, and laboratory data will be analyzed. Bone mass loss will be assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), based on WHO guidelines. LVH will be evaluated by transthoracic echocardiogram, following the recommendations of the American Society of Echocardiography.
