Abstract

The pursuit of producing higher quality pork with lower costs and minimal environmentalimpact leads researchers to study the nutrition and processes involving the use of mineralsby pigs. Calcium and phosphorus are the most abundant minerals in the bodies of theseanimals, essential for osteomuscular metabolism, and serving non-structural functions. However, there are still disagreements regarding the best inclusion ratio of these mineralsin diets and how different bioavailability's affect the performance of pigs destined forslaughter. Thus, the objective of this work is to evaluate the effect of adding vitamin D (25-OH D3) to growing and finishing pig diets with different Ca:P ratios on performance, digestibility, meat and carcass quality, and mineralization. One hundred ninety-two pigs willbe used in a 2x2 factorial design, assessing two different Ca:P ratios and the inclusion ornot of vitamin D. The variables analyzed will include performance, digestibility, economicanalysis, blood parameters, carcass and meat quality, bone strength, and sensory analysis.Statistical analysis will be performed using SAS software (SAS INSTITUTE INC, 2009).
