Abstract

To evaluate the bioavailability and the effects of two isomeric sources of methionine (Met) in diets of starter pigs, two experiments will be conducted at the Laboratory of Swine Studies of FCAV / UNESP - Jaboticabal. Forty-two castrated piglets, with high genetic potential and initial body weight of 10 kg in the first and 20 kg in the second study will be distributed in 7 treatments, considering the initial weight. The studies will be divided into two experimental stages of 21 animals each. Experimental diets will consist of T1: basal diet; T2: basal diet + 0.03% DL-Met; T3: basal diet + 0.06% DL-Met; T4: basal diet + 0.09% DL-Met; T5: basal diet + 0.03% L-Met; T6: basal diet + 0.06% L-Met; T7: basal diet + 0.09% L-Met. The animals will be housed individually in metabolism cages in the experimental period for 12 days, with 7-day adaptation and 5-day period of collection of feces and urine. On the 14th day of the experiment, blood samples will be collected and later the animals corresponding to T1, T4 and T7 treatments will be slaughtered for liver and small gut sampling. In the blood plasma obtained, urea and oxidative status (also evaluated in the liver and duodenum) will be evaluated for concentrations of GSH, GSSG, CAT, MDA and carbonyl. Samples of duodenum, jejunum and ileum will be used to evaluate intestinal morphology. The results of the nitrogen balance will be submitted to orthogonal contrasts analysis and multiple linear regressions for bioavailability determination using the slope ratio technique. The other variables will be evaluated by comparison of means, with 5% of significance. (AU)
