Abstract

The optical reflectometer was developed as a laboratory equipment and showed promising results in quantifying initial in vitro erosion. For its clinical application, the same miniature system, the size of a pen, was developed, which was also able to assess in vitro erosion, corrrelation with other methods. It could be a promising alternative, for quantifying erosion in clinical studies. The aim of this project ir to analyze the effectiveness of the portable optical reflectometer in detecting and treating inital in vivo dental erosion: it will be a randomized crossover clincal study with the participation of 12 volunteers. There will be two factors under studt: diet (normal and erosive) and treatment (water or a solution of sodium fluoride and stannous choride), totaling 4 groups: DNA - volunteers with a standardized normal diet treated with water; DNFE - volunteers with a standardized normal diet treated with Elmex erosion protection solution; DEA - volunteers with a standardized diet at risk of dental erosion development treated with Elmex erosion protection solution. Initally, initial optical reflectance (pen reflectometer) will be performed, and the volunteers will be randomly divided into treatment and diet, encompassing 4 crossover phases of 3 days each (with a 2-week washout period). Erosive and normal diets will be controlled and provided by the researchers. Treatment will be carried out daily, once a day, though a 10 ml mouthwash of the solution to be tested for 39s. The analysis of surface reflection intensity will be measured every day after the start of the diet and the proposed treatment, at the beginning of the following day. The relative surface reflection intensity will be calculated, and if the data pass normality and homogeneity tests, the data will be submitted to a two-way repeated measures ANOVA followed by the Tukey test (p< 0,05).
