Abstract

The downtown area of a city functions as the hub in its circulation system, attracting people for various activities and situated in the most accessible part of the city. Urban growth leads to the expansion of this central area, giving rise to subcenters and other forms of centrality such as specialized axes, business districts, event centers, hypermarkets, and shopping malls. According to the principles of Space Syntax theory, the configurational structure of a city inherently influences movement and flow patterns, playing a primary role in generating these patterns and thereby forming centralities. The aim of this research is to identify and classify potential centralities within the city of Presidente Epitácio through syntactic analysis, taking a diachronic perspective. This exploratory study will utilize Space Syntax methodology, calculating measures of Global Integration (radius n), Local Integration (different radius), connectivity, and intelligibility to identify the most accessible areas of the settlement, hence those with centrality potential. To validate such areas in the actual map, it will be considered the land use and co-presence, through fieldwork.
