Abstract

This study proposes an undergraduate-level investigation in the field of vibrations and aeroelasticity. A structure typically known as locally resonant metamaterial, with the purpose of promoting passive vibration control over a relatively wide range of excitation frequencies, is considered. Based on pertinent literature, an aeroelastic metamaterial will be modeled and numerically simulated. A major goals is the identification of attractive configurations to mitigate flutter-related oscillations over different airflow speeds. The bending-torsion coupled nature of flutter introduces challenges since the oscillation frequencies change with airflow speed, such that wide bandgaps, as well as some adaptive capability, may be desired. Concerning with the student visit at Duke University, studies on metamaterials and aeroelasticity will be conducted based on pertinent literature with supervision, guidance and advice of Prof. Dr. Earl H. Dowell. The student will have the opportunity of discussing about modeling, solution strategies, and eventual results interpretation, certainly contributing to develop his research skills. The student will have the opportunity of following other lab students conducting experiments on related topics. The visit is a unique experience for the student in both personal and academic aspects.
