Cross-cultural adaptation of the Communication Scale Interprofessional Health for Brazilian culture

Abstract

Interprofessional communication involves exchanging information between two or more people through verbal or non-verbal signals. It is therefore essential in health care, as it promotes a process of improving patient safety. Given its importance, the Interprofessional Health Communication Scale was developed and validated in Portugal. Due to the scarcity of instruments on the subject in Brazil, this research will aim to adapt and validate the content of the Interprofessional Health Communication Scale in Brazilian culture. This is a methodological study that will be carried out in three stages: evaluation of content validity by a group of at least five experts who will assess the equivalence, clarity and relevance of the items; pre-testing with 30 health professionals working in a public hospital in the interior of São Paulo and evaluation of the documents by the author of the original instrument. The data will be tabulated in Excel for Windows/XP®. Content validity will be assessed using the Content Validity Index and the Modified Kappa Coefficient. The author of the original instrument has authorised the process and the study will be approved by the Research Ethics Committee. It is hoped that this research will provide an instrument to measure communication between healthcare teams and, in the future, enable the implementation of strategies that contribute to better-organised results.
