Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the performance of visual (ICDAS-II) and radiographic (RX) examinations for occlusal caries detection. Methods: Permanent human pre-molars and molars (n=120) with occlusal surfaces varying from sound to different degrees of non-cavitated and cavitated caries lesions will be selected. These teeth will have its occlusal surface photographed, (6.25x) where the sites will be selected and studied. Standardized bitewing radiographs will be taken using Ekataspeed Plus Film (#1) and RX device Gnatus XR6010 (60kvp/10mA/0.5seg). The films will be processed in an automatic machine and mounted in special holders. Two dental students will analyze all select sites twice with one-week interval, giving scores for ICDAS-II (0-6) and RX (0 - 3).The Gold Standard will be given by histological analysis observation under a light microscope and lesions will be classified in a 5-point scale according to Ekstrand et al. (1997). For occlusal caries detection, the reproducibility intra and inter-examiner and the effectiveness of visual and radiographic examination will be obtained. (AU)
