Abstract

With the implantology advent, the use of frameworks made of commercially pure titanium (cp Ti) has increased although some disadvantages have encouraged the search for alternative titanium alloys. Among the elements searched to be added to titanium alloys, tantalum has been used in experimental alloys because of its biocompatibility and corrosion resistance. However, it is necessary to consider that the materials will be subjected to mechanical and chemical degradation in the oral environment throughout toothbrushing. There are studies in the literature relating that fluoride ions are able to attack passive layer present at the titanium surface, increasing the material susceptibility to degradation. On the other hand, it is argued that experimental titanium alloys containing tantalum in their composition present a passive layer different from that created at the surface of cp Ti, more stable and corrosion resistance. The increased looking for aesthetic treatments has putting in the market dentifrices presenting whitening potential, which can present peroxides in their composition. Associated to peroxides, which interfere in the corrosive potential of dental alloys and amalgam, dentifrices present fluor in their composition. Because there are not relates in the literature about the effect of dentifrices with whitening potential at the surface of titanium, the aim of the present study will be compare the surface of an experimental titanium alloy Ti-5Ta, developed by the group of the research, and of cp Ti, after submitted to toothbrushing assay using dentifrices with and without peroxide in their compositions.
