Histopatologic analysis of the biocompatibility of the ciprofloxacin, minocycline and metronidazole tri-antibiotic paste in subcutaneous tissue of rats.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the tissue response to implanted polyethylene tubes filled with tri-antibiotic paste or calcium hydroxide paste. Thirty rats will individually receive three polyethylene tubes, two filled with tri-antibiotic paste or calcium hydroxide paste and one more empty tube as control. The observation periods will be 7, 15, 30, 60 e 90 days. After each period of time, six animals will be killed and the tubes and surrounding tissue removed, fixed and prepared to be analyzed in light microscope with glycol methacrylate embedding, 3 mm serial cutting and HE staining. Scores will be defined as follows: 0, none or few inflammatory cells, no reaction; 1, <25 cells, mild reaction; 2, 25 to 125 cells, moderate reaction; 3, >125 cells, severe reaction. Fibrous capsule was categorized as "thin" when thickness was < 150 ¼m and "thick" at > 150 ¼m. Necrosis and formation of calcification were recorded. The data will be statistically analyzed using Kruskal Wallis test.
