Abstract

Brazil possesses one of the biggest diversity of vegetal species of the planet. Active principles with therapeutic activity can be extracted of these plants. Pterodon emarginatus Vogel or sucupira branca is a native plant of the Brazilian cerrado which presents antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, among others. In Dentistry, the oil of this plant could be used as vehicle for medicament pastes, that are used in endondontic, in association with calcium hydroxide p. a. In the interior of radicular channel, the oil of Pterodon emarginatus Vogel could favor its disinfection; in contact with the pulpar tissue, to collaborate with its recuperation and to assist the formation of dentin bridge. The objective of this work is to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of medicament pastes constituted of calcium hydroxide p. a. and a vehicle (oil of Pterodon emarginatus Vogel or polyethyleneglycol), and of its individual components against microorganisms present in the radicular channel. The biocompatibility of these medicament pastes also will be evaluated. Antimicrobial activity will be evaluated by means of two techniques, Diffusion in Agar and Minimum Inhibitory Concentration, against standard strains and clinical isolates of aerobic, microaerophilic, facultative anaerobic and anaerobic microorganisms. Biocompatibility will be evaluated by means of secondary tests (subcutaneous implantation, in rats) and usage tests (pulp irritation, in dogs). In the first one, results will be classified according to severity of the inflammatory reaction and quantified in relation to the events present in predetermined areas. In the last one, the tissues will be submitted to histopathological analysis and observed the diameter of the exposition of experimental teeth, the deposition of dentin bridge and the presence of bacteria. Results will be submitted to statistical analysis. (AU)
