Abstract

Artin M, a lectin from Artocarpus integrifolia seeds, has been shown to accelerate the process of wound healing on burn injuries and corneal epithelial lesions in rabbits. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of Artin M on wound healing in rat palatal mucosa.Seventy-two rats will be divided into three groups according to one of the treatment assigned: C - Control (non-treated), A - Artin M, and V - Vehicle. A 4mm full thickness wound will be surgically created on palatal mucosa of each animal. Eight animals per group will be sacrificed in each time point of the 3, 5, and 7 days post surgery. Maxilla biopsy will be taken to perform: 1- histology analysis: to evaluate area of reepithelization, morphology of granulation tissue, the number of inflammatory cells, maturation of the collagen fibers and neovascularization. 2-Immunohistochemistry analysis: immunostaing for bFGF.
