Abstract

The primary aim of the project will be to use high S/N galaxy spectra from 3 of the world largest astronomical surveys to produce a database of Stellar population parameters (e.g. age, metallicity, star-formation rate). The applicant's innovative analysis techniques will allow the measurement of the key properties of > 100,00 galaxies out to a red shift of Z ~ 1 (~ half the age of the universe), wish unprecedented accuracy. This benchmark database will be based on thru recent surveys; the 6 degree field galaxy survey (6dFGS), the sdss and the Galaxy and Mass Assembly Survey (GAMA). These surveys overlap on the sky, permitting direct inter-comparison of the results for individual galaxies from each survey, thus providing insight into the surveys' systematics. Their differing features (e.g. selection criteria, sky and redshift coverage, etc.) result in each survey being well suited to address differing specific issues (i.e. trends with galaxy environment, mass and redshift). The proposed research will therefore provide data on a record breaking number of galaxies and will allow the applicant to address outstanding issues in theories of galaxy evolution. (AU)
