Abstract

The significant rise in the number of nurses in the basic health care network in Ribeirão Preto, from 7 nurses in 1987 to 172 in 1997, and 232 in 2007, urges reflection on the contribution of nurses in the professional enhancement of health care to the population, since they are expected to provide integral assistance to individuals and families during any stage of human development (childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age) in health care units, homes and the community. The study aims to describe and analyze the clinical practices and both the demographic and professional profiles of nurses in a health care district in the municipality of Ribeirão Preto. This study is part of a larger project entitled "The expanded clinic by the nurse in basic health care". The study is qualitative, exploratory and descriptive, based on the theoretical framework of the work process in nursing and clinical practice in basic health care nursing. The data will be collected by means of a questionnaire with open and closed-ended questions in order to map out the demographic profile, the educational background and the practice of nurses working in health care units of the basic network in the western district of the municipality of Ribeirão Preto. The data will be stored in a bank for a simple descriptive statistical analysis, and the answers to the open-ended questions will be dealt with through thematic analysis.
