Abstract

Dyes used in industries that presented high mutagenic effluent in the past will be selected. The process of dyeing will be simulated and the resultant complex mixtures will be tested in the Salmonella microsome/mutagenicity test, the comet assay and the formation of DNA adducts.. Chemical characterization will be performed using HPLC/MS. A pilot study will be conducted. The compounds suspected to be responsible for the mutagenic activity observed in the complex mixture will be tested in the same bioassays. As a consequence, standards will be proposed to adequately regulate mutagenic compounds originated from dyeing plant discharges in the aquatic environment. (AU)
