Abstract

In the last years, it has been observed a great concern about the unsatisfactory performance of the constructions. Some studies on the inefficiency of these constructions point, among other causes, to faulty designs, along with the use of inadequate materials. This work draws the attention to quality and durability of reinforced concrete structures, concentrating on design aspects. The main approach consists of ensuring the structure quality by improving the respective structural design quality. This improvement can be achieved, basically, by two ways: through implementation of a quality assurance system for structural design and by means of appropriate design specifications. Thus, this work gives guidance for the development of structural design quality control and also presents a study on the behavior of reinforced concrete subjected to aggressive environments. This study forms a basis for the presentation of some durability design criteria, which is largely related to the structure quality. Finally, some practical applications of the concepts and procedures covered in the text are presented, aiming primarily at demonstrating the application of the methodology proposed for structural design quality control.
