Abstract

This dissertation aims to understand the performance of business groups in Brazilian public basic education, in the context of contemporary capitalism. Therefore, we study Abril/Somos Educação¿s case. The choice is due to the group¿s Brazilian nationality, its majority presence in the textbook market and also because it was the first company focused on basic education to open its capital in a stock exchange. We rely on the assumption that public education in Brazil and in others contexts, becomes a field for business ¿ including for the financial capital¿s reproduction ¿, considering the high level of educational groups¿ concentration / centralization and its relationship with financial capital, through stock markets or its mergers with large international groups. The period selected for this research (2010-2015) begins with Abril / Somos Educação¿s origin, as a segment of Abril Group, in 2010; until 2015, when company¿s control was assumed by Tarpon. It is a documentary research; the information was collected, mainly, in Abril/Somos Educação and its controllers (Abril Group and Tarpon)'s sites; in national and international media, in the documents made available by BM & FBovespa, in the sites of the National Fund for Education Development and of the State of São Paulo¿s Accountability Office. As results, we observed that the activities¿ financialisation of Abril/Somos Educação significantly increases its profits, expand its presence in the public education sector and, consequently, its control over schools (AU)
