Abstract

This dissertation is a study of the changes that occurred in the order of interrogative sentences constituents of European and Brazilian Portuguese. For this analysis were used 16 texts by Portuguese authors and 7 texts by Brazilian authors. All this material is available at the Corpus Tycho Brahe, allowing searches in the Corpus using the Corpus Search tool. From the results, it was observed that the order of embedded interrogative sentences in European Portuguese accompanies the change observed in affirmative sentences (cf. Galves and Gibrail, to be published, Galves and Paixão de Sousa, to be published; Paixão de Sousa, 2004). In addition, the use of the element "-é que", strategy that allows the SV order in European Portuguese, it grew among authors born in the eighteenth century, also being frequently used in the Brazilian authors texts (cf. Duarte, 1992). As a hypothesis, it will be argued that the inversion in European Portuguese, both in direct and in embedded interrogatives, is due to verb movement to the left periphery of the sentence (Rizzi, 1997), and that the element "-é que" is different in two varieties of Portuguese (AU)
