Abstract

Six Nelore steers (initial body weight 250 kg) were used in a 6 X 6 Latin Square design to evaluate the effects of replacing com grain by millet grain on feed intake, nutrient digestibility and ruminal parameters. A 2 X 3 factorial arrangement composed the following experimental treatments: 1, 2 and 3 were com silage based and 4, 5 and 6 were elephant grass silage added with 13% of dry citrus pulp. In each roughage, com grain starch was replaced by millet grain starch in the foIlowing ratio: 100:0, 50:50 and 0:100 of concentrate dry matter. Adding millet to the diet did not affected (P>0.05) feed intake and nutrient digestibility, except ether extract and starch digestibility which increased as millet was added to the diet. Elephant grass silage increased (P<0.05) feed intake and acid and neutral detergent fiber digestibility. Com silage increased (P<0.05) starch intake. Millet replacement decreased (P<0.05) ruminal ammonia and acetate. Elephant grass silage increased (P<0.05) total fatty acids, acetate and butirate concentration and the acetate: propionate ratio (AU)
