Abstract

This study investigated the interaction of children with instruments of semiotic mediation during their literacy process. The aim of the study was to elucidate how children appropriate these instruments during their literacy process and which meanings do they generate from their interaction, and the repercussion over cultural development and their psychological constitution. To tackle this, data were collected from 9 workshops performed with children from a public elementary school, covering the use of computers and pedagogical activities, that were recorded in video and audio, and further described in detail in a diary for analysis. Data were then classified in 3 themes: use of digital gadgets; meanings created by the interaction with the semiotic instruments and writing; repercussions on cultural development and psychological constitution. The recorded data were analyzed accordingly to the dialogical discursive analysis perspective. The results indicate that digital writing has specificity, requiring specific gestures and actions, different aspects from those involved in conventional writing. It was also observed that the practices involving computer, articulated to situations of dialogue, which provided interpersonal mediation and meanings expansion, contributed to reconfigure students' digital operation modes, which indicates an instrumental use of the device. This use, alongside writing, interferes on the psychic functioning (AU)
