Abstract

Internationally and nationally, some research carried out meditation interventions in higher education and proved several benefits, such as better levels of concentration, relaxation and well-being in university students (MAGEE, 2010, SHAPIRO, BROWN and ASTIN, 2008). Thus, from a survey of meditation research in classrooms in higher education, an action research was carried out in which meditation practices were guided (silent and with the body posture adapted to the chair in the classroom) with a focus on in breathing and relaxation, lasting 3-5 minutes, for a few weeks during two semesters in nine classrooms of courses in different areas (exact, health and biological professions, humanities and arts) at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP). The collection of results consisted of a methodological triangulation (FLICK, 2009, p. 361) that used questionnaires and anonymous drawings for the students, in addition to the creation of a research diary by the researcher herself. Discussions about meditation, body-mind studies and post-colonialism were also investigated in the literature. The initial (proven) hypothesis was that meditation could provide a more harmonious relationship between the body and mind of students, given that there is a strong separation and disconnection between body and mind in the university and in life in general (VARELA, THOMPSON, ROSCH , 2003; MOURA, 2010). Thus, it was intended to expand the studies of meditation in the educational field, investigating the reflections and impacts that such a practice, notably oriental, can bring to Western higher education (AU)
