Abstract

The history of historiography, a consolidated area in Brazil, imposes new questions on contemporary historians and the resumption of central problems of the historiographic craft. This thesis starts from a fundamental problem of making history, the historical judgment; seeks to endow it with historicity in a specific clipping, questioning: do historians judge? If so, what do they judge? Would it be the action of a given individuality to be imitated? Or would it be the importance of an event for the civic construction of a society? To answer these four questions, a thorough reading of the historical texts of six jurists who became active members of the Brazilian Historical and Geographical Institute (IHGB), between the end of the 19th century and the middle of the 20th century was carried out, are they: Tristão de Alencar Araripe (1821-1908), Olegário Herculano de Aquino e Castro (1828-1906), Pedro Augusto Carneiro Lessa (1859-1921), Augusto Olympio Viveiros de Castro (1867-1927), Rodrigo Octávio de Langgaard Menezes (1866-1944) and João Martins Carvalho Mourão (1872-1951). Therefore, what is investigated is the historiographical act of judging – an expression arised from Paul Ricoeur's problematizations about the act of judging and Reinhart Koselleck's about the dissolution of topos Historia magistra vitae and the constitution of the modern concept of History - understanding how changes in the way of apprehending the past and institutional alterations transformed the relationship of these historian subjects with their objects of study, also changing the ways of reassembling the facts and issuing judgments, to finally take a position (AU)
