The thesis has as its theme the critical analysis of documentation procedures, including various methods of surveying and diagnosing the built heritage, taking as object of study the monument-building that houses the Museu do Ipiranga, headquarters of the Museu Paulista of the University of São Paulo. The comparison of the techniques and procedures already adopted is of paramount importance to understand their effectiveness and limitations, bearing in mind the central goal of heritage preservation. As a critical process, the analysis aims to provide inputs for historiography as a source of clarification, based on the inquiry of documents, specific bibliography, and the empirical object of study itself. Since its interdiction in 2013 until the commencement of restoration works in 2019, the Museu do Ipiranga underwent a series of studies that aimed to support decisions made for its reopening, scheduled for the Brazilian Independence Bicentennial in 2022. The central issue addressed by the research revolves around the potential of these procedures, based on the analysis and comparison of the documentation, surveying, and diagnostic techniques adopted, in order to discuss their relevance as preliminary stages for intervening in built heritage. Greater attention is given to 3D laser scanning, a method for acquisition of high-precision morphometric data, which has been increasingly used in the restoration field but requires critical evaluation and rigorous adoption. The case of the Museu do Ipiranga is particularly relevant since three surveys of this type were carried out, which results differ in quantitative and qualitative terms, and allows an in-depth analysis of the technique, its execution stages and the requirements for the results to be compatible with the accuracy of this type of technology. To provide inputs for the proposed discussion and the raised hypothesis, other experiences are addressed by the research, justifying documentation as a critical and fundamental operation to support conservation and restoration projects of the built heritage.
