Abstract

The thesis deals with a critical analysis of the documentation procedures, including varied methods of survey, and diagnosis of the built heritage, taking as object of studies the Museu Paulista. The comparison of the techniques and procedures already adopted, especially the expected results obtained through 3D laser scanning, is extremely important for understanding the effectiveness of these procedures, their contributions and their limits, aiming the central objective of preserving cultural heritage. Moreover, as a critical process, this analysis aims to provide inputs for historiography as a source of clarification, based on the inquiry of documents, bibliography and the object of study itself.Since 2013, Museu Paulista has undergone a series of studies aimed at its recovery. The closure of the museum and the diagnoses that have been carried out are largely due to the fact that, over the last decades, little concern has been given to the building's materiality, which houses a large collection dedicated to the history of Brazilian society from the 16th to the 20th centuries. In addition to structural and façade diagnoses, carried out and in progress, additional surveys, such as 3D laser scanning, were carried out in view of the emergency recovery context in which the building currently is.The issue addressed in this thesis will be based on the potential of these procedures for historiographic clarification, based on the analysis and comparison of documentation, survey and diagnostic techniques used for the recovery of the Museu Paulista, in order to discuss their challenges, limits and relevance as preliminary stages of intervention in built heritage, based on the experiences that have taken place in the museum since its interdiction.
