| Abstract | |
The main objective of this doctoral thesis is to investigate two railway complexes that belonged to the former Estrada de Ferro Araraquara (EFA), those located in Araraquara and Catanduva, in the interior of the state of São Paulo. After they stopped transporting passengers in the early 2000s, they were partially re-signified and thus received new uses: the former passenger and administrative building in Araraquara became the Francisco Aureliano de Araújo Railway Museum and the one in Catanduva was converted into the Estação Cultura Deca Ruette. The analysis begins with a historical review of the railways of São Paulo, moving on to an approach limited to the EFA. Subsequently, it highlights functional and typological aspects inherent to the railway complex to finally address the two case studies, which are observed from their foundations, between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, to issues such as the definition of their heritage listings and the design guidelines that inserted new functions. The discussion is based on primary documentary sources (graphic material, minutes, reports, etc.), publications (magazines, newspapers, theses, dissertations, etc.) and the results of fieldwork, including international typological references present in Spain and Italy, to discuss different aspects that are raised and analyzed in the research. As a result, based on the aforementioned objects of study (examples of many others present in the interior of state of São Paulo), it is evident that there is currently much more invisibility (or lack of understanding) around these railway complexes regarding their historical, cultural values and functional characteristics than the overall preservation of this complex and, in this sense, the exploration of its full potential.
