Abstract

Vegetable oils can be extracted by contact between the solid matrix and organic solvent, hexane have been the most commonly solvent used in this kind of process. Alternative solvents have been proposed to replace the hydrocarbon including short chain alcohols such as ethanol and isopropanol. However, for effective solvent replacement, it is necessary to investigate the impact of the new solvent in the quality of extracted oil and in the follow stages of refining. Rice bran is a raw material for oil extraction, rich in protein, minerals, vitamins and lipids. The content of fatty material can range from 18 to 24%, and from these, 3 to 6% is wax and about 4% corresponds to the unsaponifiable matter. Octacosanol, part of a mixture of primary aliphatic alcohols with long chain (policosanol), is one of the components of rice bran oil presenting an important nutritional value due to its hypocholesterolemic activity. In addition, the unsaponifiable matter of rice bran oil contains a unique group of antioxidants called gamma-oryzanol, this compound is an important substance due to its nutritional value showing hypocholesterolemic activity and early atherosclerosis. The knowledge of solubility properties of these compounds in different solvents and temperatures makes possible the use of alternative solvents in the extraction of vegetable oils. This research aimed to analyze the impact of organic solvents in extraction and dewaxing stages of rice bran oil. This assessment was performed by determining the solubility of policosanol and gamma-oryzanol in different solvents with potential to replace hexane. Data solubility were correlated with activity coefficient models and empirical equations (AU)
