Abstract

In the early nineteenth century, employees of the Bibliotheca Nacional e Pública do Rio de Janeiro (now Biblioteca Nacional) have decided to register the requests for books for readings held at the institution as well as the names of readers, in order to avoid damage or loss of the collection, producing daily records with title of books and the name of those who consulted. The work of these librarians resulted in 14 "Códices de Consulta Pública", between 1833 and 1856, currently found in the Seção de Manuscritos of that library. This dissertation turns to all the books of Belas Letras requested; highlight the novels; to identify titles and authors, and check the most requested and analyze them. The research also shows who are the most assiduous readers of novel and analyzes their profiles (AU)
