Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term behavior of the interlabial gap in Class I and Class II malocclusion subjects after orthodontic treatment and to investigate if interlabial gap behavior is related to lip length, facial pattern and treatment with or without extractions. Lateral head-films at the pre, posttreatment and long-term follow-up stages were obtained from 61 patients who initially had Class I (group 1) and Class II malocclusions (group 2) and with pre and posttreatment lip incompetence. There was significant interlabial gap reduction of 1.64 mm and 1.72 mm in groups 1 and 2, respectively, but there was no significant intergroup difference. Multiple linear regression was used to assess the relationship between lip length, facial pattern and non-extraction or extraction treatment with interlabial gap behavior. Non-extraction patients had significantly greater interlabial gap reduction (2.7 mm) than extraction patients (1.3 mm) in the long-term. Therefore it was concluded that the interlabial gap decreases similarly with time in treated Class I and Class malocclusion patients and that non-extraction treatment has greater interlabial gap reduction than extraction treatment.
