He holds a degree in Biological Sciences from USP (1976), a Master's degree in Plant Biology from UNICAMP (1979), a PhD in Plant Ecophysiology from the Botany Department - University of St. Andrews, Scotland/GB (1982), and a Post-Doc from the Universität Bern, Switzerland (1994). He works in Plant Ecophysiology and Biodiversity Conservation, having published 120 papers in specialized journals and trained 26 masters and 15 PhDs, with 1 co-supervision in progress. He has edited 13 books, including the series Biodiversity of the State of São Paulo: synthesis of knowledge at the end of the 20th century, the Atlas Inventário Florestal da Vegetação Nativa do Estado de São Paulo, the book Diretrizes para a Conservação e Restauração da Biodiversidade do Estado de São Paulo and the Ebook Diálogos Amazônicos: Contribuições para o Debate Sobre Sustentabilidade e Inclusão. He is currently Professor Emeritus at UNICAMP, retired from the Department of Plant Biology at IB/UNICAMP, Full Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, the Academy of Sciences of the State of São Paulo, the Science-Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC) of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), chair of the Brazilian Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services/BPBES, and Editor-in-Chief of Biota Neotropica. At UNICAMP he was Coordinator of 3 Postgraduate Programs (Ecology, Plant Biology, and Environment and Society), Head of the Department of Plant Biology (87/89 and 06/10), and Pro-Rector of Postgraduate Studies (96/98). At the State Secretariat for the Environment he was Coordinator of Technical Information, Documentation and Environmental Research/CINP (95) and at the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation he was Director of the Department of Thematic Policies and Programs/DEPPT (11/12). At the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) he was Co-Chair of the Multidisciplinary Panel of Experts (MEP). In 1999, as Coordinator of the BIOTA/FAPESP Program, he won the Henry Ford Award for Conservation Initiative of the Year. In August 2002, he was awarded the Order of Scientific Merit, class Comendador. In 2005, he won the von Martius Environmental Award from the Brazil-Germany Chamber of Commerce and Industry and, in 2007, he received an Honorable Mention from the CNPq Young Scientist Award. In 2009, as Coordinator of the BIOTA/FAPESP Program, he again won the Henry Ford Award, this time in Science and Human Resources Training category. In 2012 he received the Muriqui Award from the Atlantic Forest Biosphere Reserve, in 2014 the João Pedro Cardoso Medal from the São Paulo State Government, the Zeferino Vaz Academic Recognition Award from UNICAMP, the Conrado Wessel Science Foundation Award 2022, and in 2023 he was awarded the Order of Scientific Merit, class Grand Cruce.
